My brother Michael is visiting my parents now in Orlando. He drove down from Toronto and arrived on the weekend. He didn't make it down for Christmas, but he wanted to visit shortly thereafter. He thinks mom has aged ten years in the last six months when he saw her in the summer in Toronto for her college reunion. She's in the hospital right now to help provide some nutrition intravenously and deal with some of the pain and the accumulation of fluids.
My mom is sick of the chemotherapy and she doesn't want to continue any more. The side-effects have been more extreme and there's little evidence that its doing any good. So I can understand why she doesn't want to continue. He said the pain come in waves.
"Sometimes she's talking on the phone and you can see it takes a lot of concentration," he said. "The pain will hit and it's like she's evaporating in front of your eyes."
